Take Charge of Your Health

 

Taking an active role in your health care can improve the quality of care you and your family receive. Stay on top of your health by taking steps to prevent issues now, instead of waiting for issues to develop. The keys to prevention include scheduling your annual exams and health screenings and knowing what to discuss with your doctor. 

What to schedule:

  • Physical exam and annual wellness visit
  • Annual lab work - check to see if you are due to have your blood sugar, cholesterol, or other tests done
  • Immunizations - keep a record and check to see if you are up-to-date
  • Dental checkup - healthy teeth contribute to overall health
  • Annual eye exam - including glaucoma screening, and a dilated retinal exam if you are disbetic
  • Ask your doctor if you should have any other screenings, including colorectal cancer, bone density, mammogram, or Pap smear
What to discuss:
Bring a list of all your medications, any important information, and questions to your visit. It's important to be honest with your doctor. Points to discuss with your doctor include:
  • Which screenings apply to you and how often you should receive them
  • If your immunizations are up-to-date
  • Any new symptoms and changes in your health or lifestyle
  • Your medication list, including how and when to take them, any side effects you should be aware of, and what to do if you experience side effects
  • If you need to follow up, ask when and with whom
